On each knot the faithful say the Jesus Prayer – “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me” – so the mind can rest in prayer instead of counting. Known as the komboskini in Greek and chotki in Russian, it is the prayer rope of Orthodox monks and laypeople alike.
