Iveron Icon of the Mother of God (Portaitissa) – Orthodox Wooden Icon, 15 × 10 cm | Made in Georgia

Bring the protection and maternal care of the Most Holy Theotokos into your home with this wooden Iveron Icon of the Mother of God, also known as the Portaitissa ("Keeper of the Gate"). Measuring 15 × 10 cm, it is handcrafted in Georgia and carries Georgian inscriptions identifying the Mother of God.

The Iveron Icon is easily recognized by the wound on the Theotokos' cheek. According to Holy Tradition, during the period of iconoclasm a soldier struck the icon with a spear, and blood flowed from the wound. The icon was entrusted to the sea to save it, and it later arrived miraculously at Mount Athos, where it was received by the Georgian monk Saint Gabriel of Iveron. It remains at the Iveron Monastery, founded by Georgian monks, to this day.

For Orthodox Christians, and especially for Georgians, the Iveron Icon is one of the most beloved images of the Mother of God, venerated as a guardian of homes, families and travelers.
