Every priest has a story about the charcoal that wouldn't light. The deacon fans it, the choir waits, the sparks fizzle out, and somewhere a grey tablet sits stubbornly cold while the Little Entrance approaches.
The good news: at home, with a few minutes and a little patience, it is easy. Here is how to get a bright, steady coal every time.
Why Charcoal at All?
Incense grains do not burn on their own. They are resins, and they release their fragrance when gently heated on a glowing coal. The charcoal is the quiet servant of the censer: it never shows itself, but without it, the prayer has no smoke to carry.
Lighting It, Step by Step
-
Use tongs. Hold the tablet at its edge with metal tongs, never your fingers.
-
Light the edge. Touch a flame to the rim. You will see small sparks run across the surface.
-
Let the sparks travel. Wait until they have crossed the whole tablet. This is the step people rush.
-
Set it in the censer. Place it on a bed of sand or ash, never directly on bare metal or ceramic.
-
Wait for grey. After two to three minutes the tablet turns ash-grey at the edges. Now it is ready.
-
Add a few grains. Two or three are plenty. Athonite incense is strong.
Small Tips from the Sacristy
Keep your charcoal dry. Damp tablets refuse to light, so store them in a sealed tin or jar. Give the coal air: a censer with open holes breathes, and a gentle swing or a soft puff keeps it glowing. And never pile on incense. Too much smothers the coal and fills the room with heavy smoke instead of fragrance.
Always place the burner on a heat-proof surface, away from curtains, children and pets, and let everything cool completely before you put it away.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my charcoal keep going out?
Usually it was set down before the sparks crossed the whole tablet, or it has absorbed moisture. Wait for the ash-grey edge and keep the box sealed.
Can I use barbecue charcoal?
No. Barbecue briquettes release harmful fumes. Use only charcoal made for incense.
How many tablets do I need?
One tablet is enough for an evening prayer. A box of ten lasts many weeks of home use.
